College Ready or Nah

My definition of perseverance is doing whatever it takes to get what needs to be done. As a high school senior, I mapped out my entire future to where I want to go to school, what I want to major in, what I want to do for a living, and even what type of man I want to marry and reproduce with. And in my fantasy world, where the adult life was all about drinking wine and getting a pay check, I thought my life road map would go as expected.

Metaphorically, college is here to crush your dreams, and bully you to see how strong you are for the brutal reality of the world. Of course as an incoming freshman, you want to acquire a 4.0 grade point average, but if you’re anything like me, you’ll try to reach pass the stars and land on the moon. It’s extremely tedious to have the motivation to persevere when you feel as if no one is trying to help you “Be Great”. You’re right, no one will hold your hand and babysit you until you get a 4.0 grade point average. You want to be great, but you have to have a reason to be. Do you work harder than others? Do you have a higher charisma than others? Or do you just know how to get by? You know finesse.

Being a college freshman, you also aren’t use to things NOT going your way. For example, you have a bad grade in one of classes and you schedule a conference to resolve the problem and eventually brown nose to raise your grade. You walk in the office with expectations and confidence at an all-time high because you rehearsed this conference multiple times in your head. You open your mouth and ask your teacher, “Is there anything I can do to raise my grade in your class?” And your teacher tells you to withdraw out of their class. And now you’re sitting in their office with a dumb – shocked look on your face, trying to fight off your tears. Trust me, situations like this make me want to pack all my belongings and go back home to Orlando, but I always remember that I’m not here for myself. I have to be strong for my family and my future family.

Do whatever it takes to get your academic situation correct. If you’re failing tests, try studying. Can’t study alone? Try a studying group. You’re studying, and still failing tests? Talk to your teacher to see what you’re doing wrong. Still can’t pass the test, I guess it’s time for a major change. Don’t get me wrong, as a freshman it is the perfect time to change your major.

Changing your major doesn’t mean you’re weak, or you just gave up. It means you tried your hardest, and you figured out that this isn’t what you want to do. You only have the right to this decision if you tried your absolute hardest in your previous major, but maybe you chose a STEM major, but your heart is in the arts. Do what you want! This is your life, and you have to be comfortable in it. College doesn’t only hurt your feelings, but it teaches you to tough it out and keep it moving.
